I usually save this post for the end of the week but Dave is off for Good Friday and we’ll be busy last minute shopping for clothes for Resurrection Sunday and hopefully gardening before the rain rolls in. So I figured that I’d post this tonight since I might be away for the weekend.
The theme for this week was burnout. Yes, I’m experiencing burnout. It hits me every year about this time. Actually, I’m planning a future post about how I deal with burnout. One way that I deal with burnout is to have some fun with my kids. I threw caution to the wind and didn’t completely follow my lesson plans for this week. And if you know me in real life, your mouth is probably gaping open right now! ;0)
Here are some of our highlights from this week:
Instead of writing spelling words and doing workbooks, we played hide and seek spelling eggs. We hid the eggs containing a spelling word in the living room and the child would find them.
Once the egg was found and cracked open, the child would spell the word and use it in a sentence. (Sunshine Girl did numbers and counting in her eggs.)
Stickers or jelly beans were given out for words correctly spelled. We did something very similar for phonics. I’m always amazed at how motivating stickers and candy are to a child. :0)
We spent time outside in our yard. Here Sunshine Girl found a stick that looks like a rainbow.
We used natural ingredients to dye some eggs. We mixed together a vegetable/fruit, 2 –3 cups of water, and 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Boil for about 5 – 10 minutes. I really didn’t time it. I just turned it off when the mixture appeared to be ready. Strain the water to remove the vegetable/fruit. Place boiled eggs into the mixture and let set. The longer it sits, the more brilliant the color of the egg. In the above picture we used blueberries, spinach, wild berry tea, and yellow onion skins. Everything but the spinach worked well and I’m thinking if I had used fresh spinach that it may have worked better.
Here are the results:
The blue ones are from the blueberries. (I’m sure you knew that.) The beautiful yellow ones were the onion skins. (Which totally amazed my kids.) The wild berry tea made the brownish ones. There are none with the spinach. It wasn’t doing anything so we threw out that water. I wish I had had some beets or red onions.
Since Sunshine Girl was learning about “n is for nest”, we made these Rice Krispie treats nest. The boys actually made these all by themselves (with adult supervision, of course).
I read on Amanda’s blog where she was planting some grass seed in egg shells. I was inspired to do the same. I wish I had gotten some pretty brown eggs but I loved that the seed color matched the egg carton! Hopefully this will have sprouted some grass for us when we start our V is for vegetables (plants & seeds) week.
We spent time talking about our Savior this week. One special moment this week was when we were sitting at the breakfast table and my daughter decided to sing and the whole gang joined in. My momma’s heart was so incredibly full at that moment.
Here’s what she was singing:
“Savior, He can move that mountain
Our God is mighty to save, He is mighty to save.
Forever, Author of Salvation
He rose and conquered the grave,
Jesus conquered the grave.”
I’m not sure if I’ll be back before Monday since we have many adventures planned for the weekend. However, if not, let me wish you a blessed Resurrection Sunday.
He is alive!
