My Baby Boy,
Between Grammy’s broken ankle, sister’s buckle fracture, rearranging of the school area, and just everyday life, I have missed posting your very special birthday post. But today, I will tell of the adventure that we have been on these last two years…
the adventures of Evan Scott.
After the birth of our fourth child, we were asked if we were still planning on more children. I had just endured my fourth c-section and that’s one more than many doctors will allow their patients. But David and I both felt that we would have another child one day so we talked with the doctor who gave us the go ahead to having another child.
Three short months after our fourth child was weaned, we were surprised to find out that we were expecting our fifth child. David and I both had a feeling at that time that this would be our last child. We also knew that we would have another c-section so we decided to change this pregnancy up a little bit. We decided to NOT find out the gender of our baby until the birth. This was the first time that we had ever done this and sometimes it drove the planner in me bonkers. But it was fun and if I could do it again, I would have done that for all of our pregnancies.
On a hot July 18th, we headed to the hospital for our scheduled c-section and a few hours later, we were surprised to hear:
“It’s a BOY!”
And then we were surprised to hear:
“9 pounds, 14 ounces”
That was a big boy!
The nurses showed my baby boy to me and then took him to the nursery. As we sat there, I realized that this surgery was taking a little longer than normal. The doctor started to explain to me that the previous surgeries had taken a toll on my uterus and that it was a little different this time. The doctor told me that day, “No more babies, ok, Adriane. Your body can’t handle another one.” I feel that God had all ready been preparing David and I for this news as we “just had a feeling” that we were done.
We had quite an adventure in the hospital too. First, I had trouble with recovery and was in the hospital two days longer than normal. And then Evan started running a fever which meant that he would be tested for meningitis and staying in the hospital for a minimum of three days until all of the tests came back clear. We finally came home 6 days after the birth of our baby boy. It was so nice to be at home! Soon his big brothers and sisters joined us and life has never been the same since!
Evan is such a special little boy. He older brothers and sisters adore him. (And his parents too!) I’m pretty sure that he feels the same way about his siblings also. Here are a few of my special memories of Evan:
1. Evan is so full of life and adventure. Seriously. I truly believe that he keeps me young even though you will hear me say that I’m getting kind of old to be chasing after such a whirlwind of activity. (Though, I am not complaining!) If Evan is awake, I am in motion.
2. My most favorite time of the day is nap time. Evan and I sit on the couch and always cover up with my holly hobby quilt. We read a few books and then I take him to his bed for his nap. We have this little dialogue that we always have on the way to his bed, as I lay him down, and as I leave the room. He insists on taking a nap with 2 – 3 books and a plastic zebra. As I cover him, he smiles and says, “Love you too, Mommy.” I tell him I love him and start to leave the room. He will tell me at least three more times that he loves me too. It is such a sweet, sweet time.
3. Evan’s middle name is the name of my deceased brother, Scott. My brother passed away when I was pregnant with Sunshine Girl and he did not have any children. We decided that we would carry on his memory by naming our son after him. We did not expect that our child would be so much like his Uncle Scott. He has Scott’s adventure, mischief, and love for people. He even does some things that my brother did as a child. My mom, dad, and I get a chuckle out of this.
4. Some of the things that Evan loves:
~ Books…lots and lots and lots of books
~ Elmo ~ He loves to look at a Sesame Street placemat that we have and will even request that it be placed by his bed during nap time.
~ Thomas the train ~ He is just starting to be interested in trains and loves “choo choo twains”.
~His daddy ~ There’s no one else in the world like his daddy.
5. He loved his birthday cards. I wish that I had pictures of him reading all of them but he was thrilled to get birthday cards in the mail. He sat and read them over and over again.
6. I had planned to make him a strawberry shortcake for his birthday but he requested cupcakes. And when he saw these cupcakes in the store, well…let’s just say that it was impossible to leave the store without them.
7. How could I have forgotten this? One of his other favorite things is mowing. He loves to help his daddy mow so he received his very own lawnmower for his birthday.
We are very blessed to have Evan Scott in our family. I am so thankful that God has allowed us to be the parents of such a loving, adventurous little boy!
