Week 6 – The Wrap Up Week

Not every week of our home school is full of exciting activities.  Some weeks are just weeks of hard work.  But isn’t that what life is like?  Some times we have weeks full of spectacular events and some weeks are just slower, quieter days.  I think we need a good mix of both in our lives as well as in our schooling.

Hard at work or hardly working?

Since we are trying out a new schedule this year of schooling for 6 weeks and then taking a week off, we spent time this week organizing our school binders that hold all of our graded work.  I also gave the kids a progress report.  Our state does not require a progress report and I’ve not always done one but this year I decided to try it.  The kids seemed to enjoy having a visual representation of their progress for the  six weeks.

The older children help the littles during their down times.

We were finally able to do our science experiment that was rained out a few weeks ago.  We are using Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Astronomy.  We’ve been studying the sun and went out to explore the sun’s strength.  We were all amazed at how easily the sun melted this chocolate bar.

We tested the strength of the sun as we moved the magnifying glass to 3 different distances to melt three chocolate bars.  We were surprised that the sun made the chocolate smoke in a matter of seconds!

After wrapping up our first six weeks of school, we put away the books to spend a week of pursuing our own interests and completing some fall house cleaning.
