First egg

I was outside this morning when I heard a little commotion coming from the chicken coop.

I checked to make sure that the City Chicks were all safe

and walked away wondering if this was the big day.

And it was the big day.

I returned a bit later and found this little bitty brown egg…

not in the nesting box, mind you

but our first egg from our City Chicks.

We’ve had a blast checking it out and learning a bit more about chickens and eggs.

(That picture makes it look big.  It’s really small which is normal for first eggs.  Those are Baby Boy’s hands.  Actual size of the egg was about 1/2 of the size of a large egg from the grocery store.)

We can’t wait to see which chicken is next to lay an egg!

  1. Congratulations! I wish we could have chickens - didn't think about neighborhood restrictions when we bought our current home. How are you keeping them (your chickens) so healthy is this heat? Keep up the good work. cJoy

  3. Hi C.Joy. :) You know, I've actually been very concerned that we haven't been keeping them as cool as we'd like in this heat. The only things we've been doing is: (1) fruits and veggies that hold a lot of water that we've kept in the frig such as watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, greens and (2) making sure they have a lot of water and some shade. We were very surprised with the egg today. We were told not to expect any in this heat.

Our neighborhood has the policy of "if your neighbors don't complain about the chickens they are fine but if they complain the chickens have to go". I was very concerned when our chicken was squawking this morning. I know they cackle some when they lay an egg but it was a little excessive today. I'm hoping that as she gets used to the egg thing that she won't be quite so noisy!

  4. It was very cool. The kids have studied that egg all day long! Tomorrow, they want to eat it. Well, the boys do. The girls are concerned that maybe there is a baby even though I've told them it's impossible! :)

    Oh, be still my heart.

I almost feel like you just had a baby or something.

  6. Abby ran into the house saying, "Pecky had a baby! Pecky had a baby!" So the excitement levels around here were about the same as if I had had a baby! ;~D

  11. She was much louder than I expected. I haven't heard her in the house though. I just have heard her when outside. I'm hoping the neighbors don't complain. We shall see...

We haven't eaten any yet. I wanted to crack the eggs open today but the kids want to wait until there is enough for everyone to have some. (Today we collected egg number five!)

  12. They were. I have a whole entire set of pictures that I could write a post about how they waited for her to lay her second egg. It was like a man waiting for his wife to give birth! It was so funny!

  13. I need to take pictures of the eggs next to store bought eggs for others to see how small they are. I took some of her second egg too and they look huge but they are quite small. It is very exciting!

  14. You are right, Kristen, and small is usually the best way to start. :)
