Tuesday is kitchen day ~

February 15, 2011 041

If you’re a fan of Little House books like I am, then you probably know that Ma Ingalls had each day of the week organized to focus on a particular task.  Years ago when I would read the old Large Family Logistics blog, the author, Kim also had her days of the week scheduled in such a way.  I had also ordered my days in a similar way but had gotten away from it.  So I decided to give it a try again.

Since I am in need of a day in the kitchen to help do some cooking ahead, I figured that Tuesdays would be a good day for me to do this.  I was hoping that I could make Saturdays my kitchen days so David would be home to help with the kids.  However, I tend to run errands and do outside work on those days.  It was really hard to fit in a day of cooking too.  Tuesdays tend to be stay at home days for the most part so I knew they would be good days to spend in the kitchen.

Today was the first (second time around) kitchen day around here.  I did some prep early this morning before school such as setting out ingredients and making sure that meat was defrosting.  Most of the actual kitchen work didn’t happen until after school while Baby Boy was napping.

Here’s what was accomplished in the kitchen today:

  • roast for tonight’s dinner (put this on to cook first so I wouldn’t get too busy and forget!)
  • a second roast cooked and sliced for Thursday’s dinner
  • 6 pints of chicken broth
  • 2 quart bags of shredded chicken  (1 for this week’s lunches and 1 in freezer for a future meal)
  • 2 loaves of applesauce bread for breakfasts
  • prepped dinner and spices for tomorrow’s slow cooker meal
  • black beans soaking to cook in the morning
  • refrigerator cleaned out (did this second so I’d have room for the food)
  • swept/mopped kitchen

I even enjoyed a little outside coffee break in the middle of it all when Baby Boy woke from his nap and wanted to enjoy the lovely weather outside!

It doesn’t look like that much now that I’ve typed it but it has at least made meal preparation a little easier for me this week!

I just enjoyed a slice of that fresh, still warm applesauce bread while typing this little post.  Now this momma is off to enjoy a relaxing soak in the tub!  Goodnight y’all!

  1. Wow, I would say that's alot! You did all this during naptime? Where you doing this also while the big kids were working? This is intriguing to me! And I am seriously thinking that 4 kids + 2 adults = Large Family in Need of Logistical Assistance! Off to peruse that book online, and the blog, too!

  3. Sally ~ I did some of it during nap time and the rest after dinner when David got home. The big kids were alternating between playing on the Wii and playing outside. After dinner when I completed the work, they were either helping out with some chores or taking baths. If you check out her blog, look for the old blog link on the side of her new blog. That is where I got my information from. I've noticed that not all of her old links work anymore. I had a lot of the information saved from a long time ago. I really want to get her book though.

Amanda ~ Come on over. I've saved you some bread and I'll brew you a cup! ;0)

  5. You did an awesome job! That is a lot to get done in one day! I agree having one kitchen day a week helps make all the other meals/days go more easily.

  6. That bread looks delicious!!! I can just smell it, lol :-) I find things run smoother when I can schedule tasks. Then I don't feel so overwhelmed trying to do everything in one day.
    Great post :-)

  7. Thanks y'all! Kitchen day is definitely a keeper. It has helped me to stay on top of food prep this week and have meals done on time. It's funny but this one area being under better control has made this week much more managable! Hope you all have a good weekend. I'm off to pack for my weekend away at a musical conference. I'm so excited!

  8. Did you really say "it doesn't look like much"?! Wow, I am amazed at all you were able to get done. I wish I had that kind of discipline and structure. Love the look of that coffee cup too - we are itching to sit outside and enjoy fresh air, but we'd have to park our lawn chairs on top of snow drifts and use a ladder to climb into them. ;)

Can I ask how many days do you have like this, where you and the kids are home all day and can manage to fit in time for so much? I'm feeling like we are so caught up in outside activities that it's becoming stressful. I really want days like this, but we are lucky if we have one a week, and then it's overwhelming to try to do everything.

Maybe we can just move in with you? ;)

It's good catching up on your blog - hope you are doing well!

  9. Hi Nicole! I guess it didn't look like much to me because I tend to be an overplanner! I always put more on a list than is humanly possible to do. My mom always tells me to only put six things on my to do list because that's about all one can handle. Obviously, I still have problems listening to her!

We are only home for two full days during the week. I really have to limit outside activities or our home suffers. Right now, outside activities are picking back up and I am struggling to stay on top of everything. And I am also starting to walk a few days a week with a friend and I'm going to be home even less. So basically, this is all about to change...again!
